A RACE featuring carts designed and built by students from universities and technical institutes of five Asian countries with engines powered by Bosch lithium-ion cordless tools concluded in the north of Beijing, at the foot of the Great Wall of China recently. Ten teams with winners of qualifying races in China, Malaysia, the Philippines, South Korea and Thailand earlier competed for the final race title. Team Maejo from Thailand ultimately prevailed, finishing the final race in 1’43” to become the 2011 Asian Champions. Team Endeavour from Beijing Institute of Technology, 14 seconds behind, were the runners-up. Happy ending: Team Maejo from Thailand completed the final race in 1’43” to become the 2011 Asian champion.In the King of Power contest, a 100m race showcasing the carts’ acceleration performance, the title went to Maejo from Thailand, which got off to an explosive start and finished in 8.9 seconds. The Best Design award, selected by Bosch Power Tools Asia Pacific management, went to Siklab from the Philippines, while the Most Popular award, based on online votes in the cordless race official website, went to Zeal from Tongji University. In 2010, Bosch brought its exciting event — the “Bosch Power Tools Cordless Race” from Europe to China. This race requires students to use four Bosch lithium-ion cordless impact drill/drivers as the vehicle’s engine. All other parts, such as steering, transmission, braking system and even the racing cart’s body shape, are entirely designed and built independently by the students themselves. Following the overwhelming success of the “Bosch Power Tools Cordless Race” held in Shanghai last year, the competition has grown to a pan-Asian event in 2011, involving over 100 universities from five countries. From May to July, qualifying races were held in the Philippines, China, Thailand, South Korea and Malaysia respectively and highly excited the students in these countries. Bosch Power Tools Asia-Pacific senior vice-president Dr Werner Benade said: “We hope this competition can provide a unique platform for the youths in Asia to innovate and interact. We hope this competition can provide a unique platform for Asian youth to put their creative thinking into practice,” he said. This year’s contest concluded at Juyongguan Pass, located in an 18km-long valley in Changping county, some 50km from central Beijing. Finalists from other countries were particularly thrilled at the chance to race in the area of the Great Wall. All power tools used in the race were provided by Bosch.
